Garfield Community Farm

Fifteen Years of Community Permaculture in the Garfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh

Vision

Garfield Community Farm strives to advance food sovereignty, environmental justice, and neighborhood resiliency in the Garfield community.

Mission

We do this by increasing access to fresh produce and educational opportunities with our neighbors and volunteers, and demonstrating ecological restoration through urban agriculture in the neighborhood of Garfield.

Restoring the
land through community for over a decade

Over the past decade Garfield Community Farm has been restoring nearly three acres of abandoned and degraded urban land to become one of Pittsburgh’s most productive and active urban farms.

Community

Our desire in the early years was to increase access to fresh produce for our neighbors. What we didn’t expect were the dozens of local children who came to help, the community organizations, schools and church groups wanting to experience the farm, and the donors interested in investing in a neighborhood-based farm whose community was shaping it in greater ways than imagined. Today the farm is becoming more and more of a neighborhood asset by serving as a vibrant community green space. From artwork to seating to programming, our community members are continually shaping how our site looks and how it is used.

Increasing Access to Produce

Getting food to people in our neighborhood is a primary focus of Garfield Community Farm. We get our food out to the community in three major ways — a weekly farmer’s market, donations, and a CSA subscription program. During the growing season, we donate produce once a month to the Valley View Church food pantry, which serves over 200 households each month. Our small CSA program generally serves between 10 and 20 households. To make our CSA subscription program more accessible, we offer workshare subscriptions and discounted subscriptions. Our weekly farmer’s market is on wheels, which allows us to bring our produce to a few different spots in Garfield neighborhood. We accept many forms of payment, including cash, checks, credit/debit, SNAP, FMNP, SFMNP, and WIC.

Coming the Spring 2023, a new allotment garden! We will be converting one of our growing spaces into an allotment garden for Garfield residents. We will be installing 14 raised beds for our neighbors to use for their own personal growing space.

Stewardship of the land

Our approach to permaculture is equally focused on Earth Care and People Care - striving to work with ecological systems that bring abundance to earth and humanity.

Over the years the practice of ecological design has made the farm into a more biologically healthy and diverse ecosystem.

We have witnessed the return of many migratory and native birds at the farm including the scarlet tanager, oriels, red tailed hawk, cardinals, and many other small forest dwelling birds that are sustained by the many native and beneficial berry producers at the farm. We strive to support this diversity through wise agricultural practices. As biodiversity increases problems with pests decrease, soil health increases, and production increases too.
